| Arianrhod
Arianrhod is a major Welsh triple Goddess whose story may very well retain hints of the Celtic change-over from matriarchal customs to a patriarchal world view. Her name means 'Silver Wheel' and it is believed that she ruled over the cycles of life, death and rebirth. Her sacred isle of Caer Arianrhod (which may actually have been in the Corona Borealis) was ruled by women and in ancient Welsh tradition it was believed that this was where the dead went to await rebirth. Arianrhod was a free spirit. Known for her beauty, she was one of the most powerful of the children of the Mother Goddess Don. She is a figure of primal feminine power. Attended by women only, Arianrhod mated with whomever she pleased and yet claimed to retain her virginity. In her myth, the magician Math challenged her virginity, claiming that she conceived two sons that she did not carry to term. By jumping over a wizard's staff, Arianrhod had given birth to two sons---Dylan and Llew Llaw Gyffes. Dylan (son of the wave) left immediately to go to the sea. Gwydion, on the other hand, took Llew, whom he claimed as his own son and hid him in a magic chest until he was able to breathe on his own. This invasion of her privacy infuriated Arianrhod who then refused Llew the right to a name and the right to bare arms. This was a Welsh mother's privilege. It is said that she was later tricked into granting them. Eventually Arianrhod created more magic than she could handle and her island split apart, drowning her maidservants and herself. Some scholars believe that Arianrhod is associated with the Cretan Moon Goddess Ariadne. Like all moon goddesses, she had a special love for the green things on Earth, aiding in their growth. |

| Who am I? Where do I come from? Why am I here?
Do these questions sound familiar? These are universal questions, voiced by people from all walks of life at some point during theirjourney here...For many of us it takes something major, perhaps catastrophic, for us to stop from the hustle and bustle of daily life to look deep within. We stop, we think, we re-think, we examine. Quite often, in this reflection, we find that there are quite a few parts of our lives that are found to be lacking. This is when we begin to question. For some we find that we have spent our entire lives living and being something that we are not. We hear voices in our minds telling us that this is what we ought to think, to feel....this is how we ought to be. Voices from our past....our parents, our teachers, our pastors, our politicians. ...voices. All clamoring for attention, all yelling at the same time. We spend our entire lives perfecting the art of thinking, feeling, being these things that these voices tell us....only to find at some point, some great moment, that all along we have neglected that still small voice within us....that voice that tells us who we really are, what we really think, what we really feel and how we are meant to be in this life. And so, sometimes at a grand old age, we begin to learn to listen. We learn to listen to the only voice that we are supposed to listen to....the voice of our inner being. Sometimes, at the beginning of our searching for answers to these age old questions, we begin to fear that we may die without ever knowing what it is that we came here to do...or who we really are. Sometimes we begin to fear death itself. What if what the voices from our past told us is true? What if there is some type of punishment or emptiness after death? What if there is nothing after death? And so, for some, it seems as if we are surrounded by death even as we live. Questions, fears, musings....and always, no answers. Just mystery. Death is the ultimate mystery..... This feeling of being surrounded by death, of being separated from life, of not knowing, not being able to know, of unending questions and fear is all the result of our being disconnected from our Source. What is our Source? Mystics and sages down through the ages have recognized one truth that seems to permeate every religion, every philosophy, and now even modern science. This truth is something that the ancients knew very well and took as a matter of course. It is something however, that modern man, for all of his wisdom and knowing has dismissed and forgotten. This truth is a spiritual truth, one that was once known by all. As man became more 'civilized', and religion became a doctrine, as opposed to a spontaneous connection and reverence for the Divine, this truth became known by fewer and fewer. It was taken away from the masses and kept by a few. At first it was taught in the mystery schools to a few initiates, those who could make the harrowing journey through to the end to discover the secrets. But finally, even that was stopped and it began to be hoarded by those who would like to be the all-knowing fathers of civilization. These 'knower's of the mysteries' didn't want the masses to know this truth, because then they would realize that they did not need a liaison between themselves and the Divine. What is this truth that has been hidden and kept from us? What is this truth that mystics and seers from all over the world, from many different cultures and backgrounds and religions, have all come to understand? It is that we all come from one Source. All of us. Everything. Man and beast. The stars and the sand. The plants and the seas and the clouds and the suns and you and I. This Source, this center of being, has been called by many names. Brahman by the ancient Hindus, Great Mystery by the Native Americans, Goddess by the neolithic peoples, God by modern man. Siva, Yahweh, Jesus, Grandmother Spider, Isis, Nut, Nu Kwa....endless are the names, but the principle remains the same. There is some Source, some Mystery, somewhere, that has given birth to all that we see around us. I for one, like the Hindu analogy of the Source being comparable to an ocean. You and I, and the animals, the trees, the planets, the galaxies, are waves in this ocean. We rise out from the midst of it. We are each unique in our form. Have you ever seen two waves that are exactly alike? We take our form, we express ourselves, and then we return to our Source. We are inseparable from the ocean. The ocean is inseparable from us. It is impossible to separate a wave from the ocean, just as it is impossible to separate ourselves from our Source. The Divine, the Goddess/God/ Great Mystery is within us and is so much a part of us that we cannot separate from it. The Divine is in our beloved heroes and heroines like Mother Theresa or Martin Luther King. But just as it is in them, the Divine is also in me. It is in you. It is in that fellow down the street that gets on my last nerve. It is in the steak that sits on my dinner plate. It is in the kittens that were just born under my home. It is in the birds that fly around me and the spider who weaves it's web on my window. It is in the trees growing outside in my woods and in the rock that is holding down the papers on my desk. EVERYTHING AROUND US IS THE DIVINE EXPRESSING A DIFFERENT POINT OF VIEW. Therefore, since the Divine is in me, and is in you, and is in everything, and since we are inseparable from the Divine, and it is inseparable from us, we can now begin to say "I AM THAT." Yes, I am that lovely little old lady down the street who has such unending patience. I too have unending patience. The same source that gives this quality to her, that abides within her, abides also within me. I am that. I am that tree outside my window. The same source that gives the tree that ability to grow without striving, to grow by just being, that source also abides within me. I am that. However, I am also that person down the street that I don't like so much. You know, the one who doesn't want to work, who likes to live off of other people....or perhaps the one who does all the gossiping and rumor-mongering. Yes, that person too is a part of the Source. That person is inseparable from the Source. And the same Source that is within that person also lives with in me. Just because we don't agree with that person, does not make them any less a part of the Divine than we are. They are simply the Source expressing itself in a different way. Yes, I am that.....too. Kind of makes one look at things a little differently. ... This is the mystery. This is why the ancients were able to see everything in the world as sacred and to live in a sacred manner. This is why they were able to live for thousands of year without weapons. This is why the stories of an ancient Golden Age abound. The Golden Age was simply the time when people knew about the Source. When they knew about their connection to the Divine and to each other. This knowledge brings life, and freedom. It brings patience, and kindness and love. Perhaps the original sin was in the forgetting.. .... When we forget who we are, when we forget that we are part of something bigger than ourselves and that all around us is a part of something bigger, we begin to fear. The forgetting brings death. In our forgetting, since we then see ourselves as so small and finite, we cannot possibly believe that still small voice within us. We must be told what to do by someone who knows more than us. In the forgetting we give away our power. We die. But with death comes rebirth. It is in our dying that we begin to question. And we learn to listen....learning what the ancients knew so long ago. That still small voice is the only voice that we can trust. It holds the clues to our origin, and it knows where we are going. One way of reminding ourselves of this principle is by drawing. Get a few colored pencils and some paper. Turn off the phone, lock the doors, put on some beautiful music, light some candles and incense and sit down. Quiet your mind by concentrating on your breathing for a time. Then pick up your pencils. How do you picture the Divine? What do you see? Close your eyes and look on the screen of your inner mind. Perhaps it will be a panorama. Perhaps it will simply be a symbol. Or a well recognized face of a Goddess or God. Don't try to decipher what you see, and don't discriminate. Just draw what you see. Place this picture in a prominent place where you will see it daily as a reminder from whence you come. As you go through your day and you meet lovely people and not so lovely people, remind yourself that they too are Divine, just like you. Remind yourself "I am That", and see how this changes how you relate to others. As you practice these simple things, you will find yourself remembering. ....and learning to listen. Blessed be. | Breathing Honey
By Belou The sun warms the day, And the dew rises to look me in the eye. I see right through it, but feel its presence when every breath is like breathing honey. The concrete is still a variant of beige, And the dry clear sky give the illusion of cool. sweet-sticky like breathing honey. The sun looks like a crime against locality, making water rise like bubbles in a pot full of air. Sun-butter yellow tinges everything like breathing honey. Rocking in a shade that's dark like the tree bark - cool like lit coal, trying to make a breeze. All the while breathing honey. Patiently By Belou In her eyes A sound Underneath the quiet Like a match Waiting patiently To be lit |

| CAT
Often when we are thinking about totems and animal medicine, we tend to over look our domesticated friends. This week, as I was preparing to write about an animal for this column my cat kept doing little things like lying on my keyboard and jumping on my lap. Finally he got my attention as I realized it would be unjust not to give some time to Cat as a totem. Down through history, in many different cultures, Cat was either honored in their own right, or revered as a Deity. In Egypt, cats were regarded as sacred and had their own Deity. The Egyptian Goddess Bast was often portrayed as a Cat herself, or with the head of a Cat. The Scandinavian Goddess Freya drove a chariot that was pulled by Cats, and the Hindu Goddess Shasti is often portrayed riding on a Cat. The Greeks also had a place for Cats, associating them with their Goddess Artemis. Cats evoke a sense of mystery, magic and independence. This is because Cats are night creatures. Unlike us, they can see very well at night. We associate the dark with things we are afraid of, things we don't want to see and the subconscious. Cats, on the other hand, are perfectly at home in the dark. They, instead, want to be left alone during the day---hence their association with independence. We want to cuddle and all they want to do is get some sleep after having been up all night. Can you blame them? Cats are also strongly associated with female power. The female is extremely protective of her young and will attack anyone or anything that is perceived as a threat, without regard to her own life or safety. The female is also the hunter. While male cats will hunt for themselves, the females hunt with the intention of bringing home food for the young. Cat teaches us how to be a good provider by thinking communally. She teaches us how to hunt for that which is hidden from us, how to pounce when we need to, how to come into our own power and how to listen to our inner voice. If Cat has shown up in your life, be assured that somewhere, either now or in the near future, magic is afoot!! By Morgana Ravenwings |

| The Great God Pan
By Susan Allen Perhaps the oldest of the Gods, Pan predates all Olympian Gods and Goddesses. Signs of his worship appear as early as the 6th Century BCE (600 BCE). He was worshiped by “civilized” cultures, so there are many written records and artistic renderings of him in existence. He was born in the hearts of the shepherding people of Arcadia. Stories of Pan are part of our culture and almost all people know of him. Perhaps his immortality is due in part to his humorous, fun-loving nature. His adventures include challenging the Gods to musical duels, accidentally sleeping with Hercules, and wooing nymphs. Pan represents humanity at its best and at its worst. Pan once challenged Apollo to a musical contest. King Midas judged the night’s musical program. At the end of the evening, Midas declared Pan the winner of the duel. The egotistically Apollo, turned King Midas’s ears into those of a donkey. This did not deter Pan from performing, nor from making new instruments. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Pan’s most famous instrument, the pan Flute, came from one of his darker deeds. Pan had become enamored with a young nymph named Syrinx. She was one of the most enchanted creatures of the forest, adored by Satyrs and other woodland creatures. Pan spied her from his home on Mount Lycaeum, and he called compliments to her. She ignored his attempts to woo her, and ran to the River Ladon. Pan was much faster than Syrinx and quickly overcame her. She quickly cried for the water nymphs to save her, so they turned her into river reeds. Disappointed at his loss, Pan clipped the beautiful reeds and bound them together. Whenever he blew through the reeds, enchanting music could be heard. He named the instrument a syrinx in honor of the nymph he’d scared away. Another beautiful nymph escaped Pan when he chased her into the woods. She pleaded with the wood nymphs to help her, so they turned her into a great pine tree.
Pan soon became entranced with Omphale, the Queen of Lydia. Omphale knew of Pan’s affection for her, but she had no feelings for him. She tricked Hercules into sleeping with her. While he dozed in a drugged stupor, she took his clothes and dressed him in hers. She left him there in her bedchamber. Pan quietly snuck into Omphale’s bed chamber and excitedly slipped into her bed. He cuddled up to the nightdress clad body and began his lovemaking. It was at this moment that Hercules woke up from his stupor and realized what was happening to him. Imagine Pan’s surprise when not only did his advances get rejected yet again, but he also got thrown across the room by the mighty Hercules. After this incident, it is said that Pan decreed that no clothing could be worn to his religious rites. Some also say that he began to spread a nasty rumor that Hercules was a transvestite. Perhaps it was all of Pan’s failed attempts at love that drove him to his most ghastly deed. Her name was Echo. Of all the nymphs he’d previously encountered, she was by far the loveliest. She was a dancer and a singer and had no need of love from any male, God or mortal. She didn’t run from Pan, she simply ignored him. Enraged by her obvious disdain for him, he ripped her to pieces and spread her body all over the Earth. Greatly saddened by Pan’s anger, the Great Earth Mother, Gaia, took the pieces of Echo into herself. Now, Echo’s beautiful voice can be heard all over the world, repeating the words of others. Pan is also the source of many modern words such as panic, pandemic, and pandemonium. Pan’s musical powers include the ability to control people. He could induce panic with his music or lovemaking. Whatever behavior Pan desired he could create with his song. An alias of Pan’s is the Horned God. The Horned God is celebrated during the fertility rite of Beltaine. Pan is god of fertility and sexuality first and foremost. He represents the most fundamental aspects of male virility and sexuality. He is a perfect representation of life’s most valuable attribute, reproduction. Imagine the importance of Pan as a fertility god to the agricultural society who bore him. It is possible that these most human of characteristics are what led early Christians to adopt traits of Pan’s for their Satan. Both have cloven feet and horns. However, Pan represents life at it’s best and worst, while Satan only represents the human worst. It is also apparent that while this may have occurred, poetry from after Christ’s birth exists and shows Pan in a favorable light. Pan has continued to permeate our culture through guest appearances in movies, books, fine arts, and music. It is said that Pan is the only god who has actually died. However, it is obvious that Pan may be more “alive” than any other god. While other gods have changed or been assimilated into other cultures, Pan still remains uniquely himself. |

| We Asked, You Answered
Edited by Anarane Well here we are the second installment if you will of Call of the Wild. In my last article I asked for the men of our craft to answer a few questions or just give there opinion on how they felt about Paganism for Men in our modern times. Well I have been lucky enough to have one of our fellow male pagans answer me. There is one thing that you must remember here. These are others opinions and I value those opinions. Whether you agree or not with what is written, please show the same respect for them as you would want shown to you. Also remember you are more than welcome to offer up your opinion also. If you feel you’d like to do this please e mail at anarane2004@ yahoo.com Your comments and/or opinions are welcome. This month’s opinion comes from Monkey. He is a mix match of Wicca with a bit of Shamanism mixed in. It is kind of hard to really pin Monkey to any one thing. I guess you’d have to know him to understand that. Anyway… let’s get on with it. My question I put forth: What I'm looking for is a man's view on our little world. What you like about it or not like about it. Problems you have come across and your ideas on how to make things better or easier for your fellow male pagan. Monkey’s Opinion: You sure you want my opinion? You won’t like it. 1. What I don't like, FLUFF. Life is not all sweetness and light. Why can you not go about disagreeing with out the fluffy’s bursting into tears because you dared to disagree with their opinion. 2. People that look at the past as a crutch, because they can not cope with modern life. The answer to your "salvation" is not in the past, in Wales, Ireland or any where else. It's in you now and so are the answers. Buddha, Jesus, Mohamed, and all the enlightened found it in a time that was modern to them, so must we. 3. People claiming that they are a certain level of competency. "Oh, I’m a level 23 wiccan bullshit". Most of them I met can not answer 99% of the questions I ask, and don't (when I analyze them) seem as competent as me, and seem quite agitated and disturbed at some of the questions I ask. So who puts these incompetents in charge? Who gives them the right to be in charge? Just because they have jumped through a few hoops does not make them "Merlin" or head of the magi. 4. Intolerance and prejudice towards other pagans. WE all get enough of a bashing of "norms" without getting bashed by other pagans. Just because we don't see eye to eye or believe exactly in what they do . I must admit I look at myself as a bit of a pagan warrior fool. There is a fifth reason but I don't feel that impolite at the moment. Things have to move or stagnate and get stale. Paganism is the same; it has to go forward in to the 21 century. Monkey I would like to say “Thank You” to Monkey for taking the time to offer up his opinion. As I said before if you feel you have an opinion to give then email me. Let me know. If you do not want your name involved I can omit it without a problem. Until the next issue, May the God and Goddess Bless you in all you do! Biaidh Anarane |

| Change A Light Bulb
By Susan Allen As your light bulbs go out, replace them with the new fluorescent light bulbs. They fit in the same sockets as your old light bulbs and use 75% less energy. They also last 10 times longer. This equals lower power bills and fewer trips to the store to buy bulbs! They provide the same amount of light as regular bulbs, so the change is easy to accommodate. How does this help the Earth? Well, if you replaced 6 of the bulbs in your house with fluorescent bulbs, you would prevent emissions equal to six million cars being on the road over the lifetime of the light bulb. Now that’s an idea that can help everyone breathe easier! |
