Earth Healing Ritual Mandalla/ Sand Painting

Since this is a healing ritual it should be done during the waxing moon.

This can be performed indoors or out.  Find a quiet space with a flat surface that you can use to create your painting.  Be advised you are working with sand so I would not recommend any carpeted areas.

List of materials.

1.         Colored sand or salt (naturally colored sand is best, but if you cannot find it, see the instructions below for coloring your own salt)

2.         A board or cardboard if you are performing indoors.
Directions for Creating Colored Salt

Shopping List:
1.         Fine sea salt (non iodized)
2.         A set of food coloring
3.         Black powdered Rit Dye for Black salt
4.         Red powdered Rit Dye for red salt (food coloring with salt tends to make pink unless you use a ton               of food coloring)
5.         Purple powdered Rit Dye
6.         Plastic forks
7.         Glass Bowl (you probably already have one of these)

If you do not have access to naturally colored sand (which most of us do not and are not wealthy enough to go around crushing semi-precious and precious gemstones) you can used colored salt.  All you have to do is get some fine sea salt (not the granular or course) and a set of four food colorings like you can purchase at any grocery store.  I usually start with about a cup of salt in a glass bowl and then add the food coloring a few drops at a time.  I have found that using a fork to mix it works well. As you mix the salts and dyes, focus your energy into the salt. If you an athame, once the salts have been mixed, you can use this to stir and empower your salts with your energy.  I would not recommend using a wand for this, because it too will be dyed. At first it will look like it is not working, but just be patient it does work. Let it sit over night. It will look like it is all clumped together. Just stir it to break it up and it goes back to its fine consistency.

I like to sit my salts out and sun-charge them. This serves two purposes, charging them with sun energy and also allowing them to dry more evenly.  You can also charge them on the full moon and keep them on had for special purposes.  They look really pretty in clear jars set up on a shelf and none of your muggle friends will be the wiser (he he).    For hard to mix colors like dark purple or black, I usually purchase Rit powdered dye to mix with the salt.  Do not use the liquid dye because, take it from me, it is a huge mess. For white, obviously, leave it plain.
Colors Needed and their Representations

Green – element of earth, healing and fertility

Blue – element of water, healing, peace and happiness

Brown – Animals (You can used natural sand, like play sand or sand that you collect)

White – purification

Red – Element of fire – maintaining health, protection

Yellow – element of air – represents sun power

Black – Banishing negativity, represents the universe

Purple – The fifth element – spirit, healing severe disease, the divine.
Ritual

Start by preparing your space and casting your circle in your usual way.  Ritually sweep the area with your besom (or your house broom will work if you do not have a special broom that you use for ritual sweeping).  If you are doing this inside, ritually sweep the cardboard or wooden board that you are using for you painting.
Place your sands so that you can easily use reach them.  You can use shells or bowls to hold your salt.  Just make sure you can pick the salt up with your hand (and get the sand and your hand back out at the same time LOL).

Sit on the ground and begin to meditate, ground yourself and visualize the Earth in its perfect state of peace and health. Think about clean waters, healthy, happy animals, pure air, fertile and healthy soil, beautiful trees, clear oceans, and peaceful coexistence – anything that you believe needs to be corrected.  Only visualize things as they should be – not how they are.  You may want to play some drumming or meditation music in the background if that helps you to focus. After you have built your personal power, take some of the green salt in your power hand (usually right for righties and left for lefties).  Make a circle, clockwise (unless you are in the southern hemisphere and then you need to do this counter-clockwise), about two feet in diameter and say:

Here is the earth, my home and mother, mistreated and neglected by humanity.

Dust off your hand and with the same hand (power hand), fill the circle with blue sand and say:

Here are the oceans, seas, rivers, lakes, and all waters of the firmament from which all life here sprang, polluted by our selfishness.

Dust off your hand and pick up the Red sand.  Make a smaller solid red circle in the center of the Blue and say:

Here are the fires that shaped the lands that give us all that sustains and maintains us.

Continue in the same manner with the Yellow sand.  Make a ring just inside of the Green circle that you made first and say:

Here is the air that supports all life on Earth; created by Fire and Water, now a testament to the man’s self-indulgence and greed.

Below the yellow ring, continue the process with the brown sand.  Make a ring just below the yellow ring and say:

Here are all the creatures that fly, crawl, walk, and swim upon Earth, abused and consumed by the gluttony of mankind.

On the outside of the green ring, make a black ring that is about 6 inches thick all the way around and say:

Here is the universe of which we are a part, perfectly functioning, perfectly free of negativity, banishing all malicious thoughts and deeds.

With the white sand, make a circle around the universe (the black) and say:

Here are the purifying energies sent out by all who are working for Earth’s restoration; protecting, preserving, and mending her waters, air, land, animals, and spirit.

With the purple sand, create a spiral that starts in the center of the red circle (in the middle of the earth) and works it way out to the black ring on the outside of the green ring and say:

Here is spirit in its divine form; healer of sickness, promoter of peace, aid to all things that live.

With your projective hand, push the white sand into lines that touch the outer part of the purple spiral, so that it is like the spokes of a wheel toughing and blending with the spiral. This is joining the projected energies with the divine.  Say:

Here is Earth – healed and transformed.  All is positive, clean, safe, and at peace. My spirit and the spirits of my sisters are attuned with the divine as we manifest this healing energy.

Continue to meditate until you feel the time is right. Take your besom (broom) and sweep the painting away, releasing it back to the earth. Focus on revitalizing Earth’s energy as you sweep. (If you are indoors, you can take your board outside and sweep it there.)
Close your circle in your usual way.
Ritual complete.
